An RCD (residual current device) is wired to both the live (phase) and neutral conductors and monitors both of these lines for them being even (balanced) if the is any difference grater then 30mA (most common RCD in a domestic property unless the supply system is a TT in which you can also fit a 100mA RCD before the board) then the RCD will trip to isolate the power to the circuit that it is connected to.
An RCD is there to save lives.

Shall we do this again lads without the insults?

He didn't really need to answer that in my opinion. It isn't a test before he gets a response. But well done to him for responding.

As his account was new, his other replies weren't going through, which were all fine, but if I'd have approved them it would have sent the thread out of context, as once again you'd hammered a newbie before just chatting like you would on site or whatever.

The guy just want's to know how to become qualified.

Tell him don't be a "Electrical Trainee" - but don't hammer him. That's just shady.

It took it out of context if I kept anything after his post which was sitting in the moderation queue, so they all went.

I'm sure you'll reply equally as fair as before.

Just verifying information, i.e. the claim of experience. No malice intended. He didn't *have* to respond to it, no; but equally I don't *have* to continue to contribute to the thread if he chooses not to. "It's a free country, brother" - Nate, 'Heat'.

Reet then. Danlad, I posted a perfectly well worded and non abusive response which has somehow fallen foul of the forum owner, I hope you saw it. If you didn't, feel free to PM me amnd I'll give you what ever advice I can.

Don't reply then pal. Let it be.

Tell us a bit more about said experience and knowledge - doing what, learning what, for how long, how, working for whom, so on so forth. The detail of what you need to go on to do, is constrained by the detail of what you've already done. Cheers.

No.

Not all replies were offensive. Or had been reported to me.

But some had. And 1) his posts sitting in moderation queue if I'd have approved them would have taken the thread out of context, and 2) if I'd have erased just those and approved his, that too would have done.

So we've started again that's all. No biggy is it.

Let's just answer the lad or not. But let's not chat about it too long. It's friday.

And don't be making stupid duplicate accounts either.

Hardly the point of the thread though eh.

Dan, no offence...I'm a newbie, but I think 'the youth of today' have no idea of prose, grammar or a proper grasp on the English language.... so when a post is made with such bad of the above, then I kind of just pointed that out

I know you pointed that out. I'd responded to that post. So I'm not sure what point you're making (ending without a full stop - I would have pointed out if I was a tw4t, maybe?).

All the best with your new thread you're about to create then, to point out that massive issue you're so concerned with. What? you're not making a new thread about that? You just want to keep replying to threads written by easy targets? Your balls are where again?

Grow up pal.

You come across as if you're making the point that you're king perfect kong by 'dissing' somebody within a thread about something not even to do with the thread topic. Surely?

PM me if you want to keep this topic going as it is.

Otherwise shhhhh and let's let this topic get back to the topic in question. Which is't about you, me, or this guys spelling.

I'm lucky that I wasn't abused in the past and I feel for those that were. But my post was about the bad spelling, not having a go at the guy for his question.....how will he get on with a CV with spelling like that?

Who was abused in the past?
Was his post about CV and whether his spelling is alright?

Can i simplify this. You used to have to have the level 3 nvq. Now i'm not sure you can do it on its own. They changed the rules.

Hold on i'll find a good site...

Along with this forum, city and guilds website this helped me. electricalqualifications.co.uk/

Everyone says different things though. NEVER speak to a private college they are salesmen who are ill informed or lying!!

Times are changing and these things are of lesser importance now than they used to be - with communications via text, social media etc this change is/was inevitable.

Although grammar/spelling can be considered important when, for instance, compiling a CV or issuing a written quote to a customer...

...it has absolutely NO importance when posting on an electrician's forum.

One thing to be careful of in this forum - if you criticise another member's spelling/grammar then yours too will be 'examined' and errors will be noted lol

What is going off with this thread?! A genuine new user to the forum has asked a genuine question and then it gets thrown off topic by a couple of posts!

I think this thread (which was modded and restarted) has 2 topics - the OP question and Dan's point about how we treat posters in general.

Why? the guy wants to know what he needs to do to become a qualified electrician. Short answer carry on working on site as a mate and attend college at night for 2-3 years to obtain the qualifications needed to get your gold card, I have no idea of the name these days, 2357 I think (probably got that wrong) which will help you obtain nvq 3 level, you may need your AM2 as well.

YEP 2357 is correct.

but maybe he`s a shadewacker...

Mike as got it spot on with his reply. The op came here maybe a bit nervous etc, and gets belittled for the sake of it, I am all for ripping into someone who comes in asking basic questions, while trading and who is clearly not capable of doing the job they are charging for.
but the op did nothing wrong I for one want to see more new members but with replies like Nicks we are going to simply scare them off.
