Downlight Wattage!!

getting my head around downlights and max loadings etc...!

scenario! customer wants 8-10 Gu10 downlights!!

obvious sums = 10 x 50w = 500w (dimmer is Max 400) so NO GO
soloution 10x 35w = 350w (50w under dimmer capacity) (actually going to drop it to 9 lights some how)

bearing in mind customer wants NO wall chasing so cant drop another switch either!! got to utilize existing switch drop and power! and they want to HAVE a dimmer!

next one! when fitting LEDS Gu10's do you use the 4/5w Figure or the equal too 35/50w figure!! i presume the LED one!! plus dimable LEDS are out of question at £25 a pop!

i thought about that mate!! trying to keep to singe back box and not having to chop walls out to fit double one!! but if needs must i will go to 600 or like you say 1000, no pre existing dimmer is 250w which is been replaced as i dont fancy using my PLi for fire damage!

Most dimmer ranges have models up to 1000watts available so maybe just go for a 800watt dimmer. We can get rotary dimmers up to 1500w and 4-wire tactile dimmer modules up to 2000w in one type we use.

Use the 4/5w figure when calculating the load. The other figure is their dream claims that it's the equivalent of a 35/50w halogen diachroic lamp in light output.

Big prob is steve you need to work out the loadings on the maximum lamp size 50 watt reason being is that some one will install 50 watt lamps not the 35 watts , think id go for the 1000 watter like phil says

You always design on the 'circuit wattage' which for LED's is almost identical to lamp wattage.

Other lamps are affected by ballast losses, raising the circuit wattage.

problem is kitchen is on dimmer as well!! so 2g 2w dimmers on a single plate! will have to extend plate which is not a problem really as i give a good price any way so loads of room built in to the price for slight mods!! lol..! would probably take a hit of 10 quid on my profits max lol!!

you still got a 500w dimmer on 500w load, bad. need at least 1000w dimmer. for each. some come with a thin skeleton patress so you don't have to fit a deeper back box.
