Power stations are pretty interesting.
Got the chance to spend a day going round a local plant once. One of the generators was on a 9 day shutdown while they stripped and repaired it. Was very cool to be able to stick your head into a turbine and have a good nosey about.

i remember seeing ferrybridge B station from fairburn ings

B has gone now...C is still running

the old electric lighting station (ferry bridge A) is still there....used as office & administration.....its also a training facility....

If any of you head north to Oban sometime drop into cruachan power station at loch awe.
its a hydro station chiselled into the mountain with the reservoir in a natural corrie up the top of the hill.
Its a feat of engineering indeed

Which reminds me, must do the tour this half-term.

Pump storage indeed archy.
it only comes on stream when the network needs a bit more grunt according to the tour guide
though I read an article last week that they want to up its capacity by a fair bit and use it more rather than as a back up

Indeed, they refill the reservoirs at night on the cheap/spare capacity, then bang it out again during the day.

Yes interesting, I work at Heysham NPS, and still find it interesting even after many years.
