I'm doing a job which needs LED tape under shelving, 6 shelves with ~1.2m of RGBWW tape under.
I've used downlightsdirect and downlights.co.uk for tape before with no issue, but quite pricey at 12.68/m. They are also probably a bit over powered for what will be ambient light under shelving, but...
Spent a good hour tonight fighting crappy 38x25mm trunking - surely it can't all be this badly made?!
My fault for getting it from Screwfix so that it came in 2m lengths, I guess. (Tower brand).
I've not had issues with their smaller trunking before, but this stuff was a nightmare. Felt fairly...
I have a job coming up where I likely need to replace old twin and earth (imperial size) feeding one, perhaps two flats in a 3 storey converted building.
The ground floor is a separate front entrance, the upper flats have a side entrance with stairwell, which is protected with smoke and EL...
Fun EICR at an HMO today, which was installed new 5 years ago (not particularly well!)
Lots of niggly things that I'll sort, but in the kitchen cupboards were two unswitched sockets which confused me for a while.
Turns out they are connected to the lighting circuit, switched by their own...
I've started to move over to AMD 2 forms for my CU installs, if only because the schedule is so much easier to tick and I can stop sticking labels everywhere...
Just had my NICEIC assessment which was all fine, and during discussion a few things came up where there seems to be a discrepancy...
Another replacement lighting job - another crappy double insulated white box to grapple with.
Even with luck - there being only one cable at each point, it was still far too much hassle but I have it a go just on principle to give them a chance. Usually I dispose of them immediately and go with...
Going to fit an 'boiling' tap for a plumber next week so asked for a pic of the CU and got this:
which is all rather odd. Doesn't affect what I want to do, but the first time I've been B3 MCBs being used and can't think of any reason why someone would choose them over the standard B6
The...
Any recommendations on good quality flush mounted PIR sensor that work well?
Need to install one in a upper market property, and had some poor experiences before with the stuff from the sheds.
Needs to be as flush as possible ideally...
Having a bit of a nightmare with what should have been a simple job.
Back in January I replaced some old Varilight dimmers which had failed after 15 years or so - and the client chose the newer V-Pro multitouch type:
With master and slave units. Feeding two separate 3 lamp units, with...
Small job including light in a shed so I picked up a LAP LED oval bulkhead which I've used before as cheap and slightly cheerful.
Only to discover that in their never ending journey to 'improve' their products they've 'upgraded' the terminals to these nasty things.
Not only would flex not...
Now that things are getting back to normal, I'm getting back into visiting wildlife centres.
British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield, Surrey is well worth a visit. Small place with a focus on native species.
My favourite is always the Scottish Wild Cat - or in this case the Scottish FURIOUS cat...
One for the more 'experienced' out there...
When was this available?
To 1363 apparently at the time, but without the sleeved pins..
Otherwise still working perfectly, so clearly a design that worked - and would be quite handy in some circumstances today.
I recall maybe 10 years...
Lighting installs are always fun when the client buys the light...
This one was the latest effort - and the first time I've seen wire nuts provided as terminals in a light fitting. Not a US company either, but German, so suprised they didn't go with Wagos or similar.
Also came with some...
Having a bit of a mare at the moment with a small 2 story HMO (6 single rooms with shared kitchen) which was fitted relatively recently (2016 or so I think) by someone else but I was asked to do an annual certificate for one of my regular landlords as she was being fleeced by a 'professional'...
One of the oddest jobs I've ever had today. Called by a plumber I know who had attended after a leak through the kitchen ceiling from bathroom above - and got a shock from the bathroom tap (and his 'pen glowed on everything')
Turned up to check and, sure enough, voltage of 16V AC showing on the...
On two occasions recently when changing light fittings I've been bored enough (after fitting the light naturally), to read the instructions that came with them...
Two different manufacturers (or at least brands) have had instructions calling for terminals to be covered in insulation tape...
Interesting situation has come up.
I have a client who rents out portable toilets - higher end ones with proper flushing toilets/urinals that are used for receptions, events etc.
They are basically built on a trailer, with plastic walls and metal reinforcing.
I've been asked to do a...
Removed this this weekend from a house built in 1963.
Presumably originally to do some outside lighting and from the way it was wired may well have been original to the house, or at least installed not long after.
Were these common in domestic back in the day, or is this possibly an...
Called to a previous client to work out why he doesn't have lights or fan in his downstairs shower room, or outdoor light...
Worked out that there was no permanent live to the switch, though there was to the fan isolator above it....
Kitchen was recently done, and "electricians" working for...
While sorting out some issues with immersions at a flat yesterday, I ran into something that seemed peculiar (to me at least).
Immersions need new thermostats/cut out, all quite normal..
However, while testing the lower (off peak) immersion I was getting 13V L-N - which I assumed was just my...
