I have just tested a new kitchen ring circuit - Cable layed a year ago and only now doing 2nd fix, but I have a weird IR reading on the Neutral/Earth test.
Continuity was fine, L/E, and L/N all fine.
The IR reading is around 17 megaohms but after splitting the ring and testing each section...
how do you carry out these tests when the cables supplying the circuits are single core and the neutrals and earths on thier appropriate busbars numbers don't match up? I baisically don't know which cables to disconnect for each circuit so i can test. CHEERS!
hi guys
if you were to carry out a ir soft test between L-N (250v) on a lighting circuit to establish any connected load, if the bulbs had been left in what reading would you expect ? As on the last job i was reading >200mohm with all bulbs left in at 250v, i expected a much lower reading...
what is the point of an IR test? yes i know its to show low risistance on cable insullation [its in the name] and that can lead to short circuit and fire risk, but with the protection we use now wont this show its self eventually. what do you tell a customer in a nursing home ? that his IR is a...
hi, to day in collage we carryied out the IR test. the Q i have for all you experienced tester is that in GN3 there is a diagram of how to carry out the test. but on the diagram the test leads were connected to the eart terminal and N bar with all cables in both bars
to day in collage we...
When i test 1 of the rings in a domestic fit i have carried out the IR test on the L+CPC i get >299 Mohms which is expected so i then moved on to the L+N and got 288 M ohms when i connect the L to L and N to N but out of curiosity i reversed the leads on the test kit and i got < 1 M ohm which...
Hi i've put in a new ring with 3 sockets and 3 fcu but when i do the ir test i only getting
L-E 74
L-N >200
N-E 134
i was going to brake it half way then test then so on
any tips
Hi, quick question for anyone who knows a bit about storage heaters. I was asked to check if an old one was working but it's on E7 and wasn't powered up at time of inspection. Next stage would be to power it up temporarily off the main board, but just for now I removed the flex from the...
Hi,
I'm having a bit of trouble getting my major works certs ready for the NIC chap to look at. My problem is my IR test results. I have replaced CU's in both my house and my parents house and just cannot seem to get a decent reading. Mum and Dad's Lights up/Down and Sockets up/Down all come...

Maybe common sense ,but I'm still learning . Even if you switch the spur off will the neon still ruin your IR reading , they wont be illuminated and therefore not connected or only connected on load side.
thanks
Hi Guys,
Can anyone explain how an IR test works for me please? I understand how to do it and the readings I should get but I'd like to understand why I'm getting those readings please. Probably a pointless question but would like to be enlightened...;)
As part of a Peridic Inspection test, on a 230v circuit having luninaires in a Explosive Atmophere area - the reason why the switch controlling the luninaires has been left in the off position?
Could someone explain to me how you IR test a new Consumer Unit Installation with a Dual RCD Board (Wylex) in an old board using the L to N Jumper lead without damaging the RCD's in the Board?
Also, where do you get a jumper lead from (other then making one i guess...)
Thanks in advance... :)
Hi lads, Just want to pick your brains . When you do an IR test and you cant disconnect current using equipment for what ever reason, the regs say you can connect line & neutral together and test to earth. Where would you put the result in on the test sheet? Line/Line or Line/Earth...
Just finished chasin round a house tryin to find the cause of the 0M ohm reading on a ring circuit IR test. I spent about 45 minutes ruling out the central heating which was fed of the ring. Nope not that. So back to basics, break the ring, find out which half the problem is on. Several sockets...
just a quick one
if i did a insulation resistance test between L N (together) and earth would i still need to disconnect bulbs and voltage sensitive equipment???
cheers in advance
Afternoon all.
Just been for an initial look at a potential CU change. Customer has an old Wylex fuseboard, installed when his property was rewired 20 years ago. I did a 250v IR test across the N and E bars and got a reading of 3.4Mohms. Each N tested individually to the E bar resulted in...
