you'd probably get away with 2.5mm in free air.
 
Thanks telectrix, been doing some pat testing off shore on wind turbines and from what I can see the maximum 2.5 cable can take is 27 amps. Am I missing something here.
 
hint. ref; method E. alternatively, get manufacturers data on the cable. yo'ull find that flex, being multi fine strand will probably withstand a higher loading than the figures given in BS7671.
 
a problem you may find is that the only fusing is on the primary ( 240V ) side of the transformer. to cope with inrush, this will probably be a 32A C type MCB.and that's for 1 transformer. if you have several transformers running on 1 circuit, then the OCPD rating will do nothing to protect the 110V cables.
 
that's because all the power is being used to turn them offshore fans.
 
I personally think it would be the other way round the house would be powering the wind turbines , im sure its a only matter of time before a ship hits one of the hideous things off the north wales coast
