Hi i see time and time again Electricians who connect either 6,10, or 16mm2 tails directly from the meter to feed a 1way unit for a shower or cooker etc, i never do it because i dont believe its the correct thing to do.

Obviously 6,10 or 16mm2 isnt rated at 100amps so if there is a fault on that piece of cable the fuse isnt going to blow the cable is goin to fail.

What are the regs on this?

Ive asked numerous people and noone can give me a straight answer, any ideas?

Cheers

I'm with you mark, i'll always use 25mm tails. I'm sure there was something at the front of the (old 16th) regs book or osg about it. Will see if i can find it again!!!

when i worked for the local electrity board this was completley acceptable,if you look at economy 7 time switches, only a 6mm tail would fit to trip the meter to "off peak" i think its covered in the supply regs, this is also the case where 16mm tails are protected by 100amp fuse as is common in south west, right or wrong is matter for debate.

May be common practice but - correct me if I'm wrong - isn't there somewhere in the Regs that says that the whole installation must be capable of being isolated from one switch - which in this instance would not be the case if you've got separate tails going straight from the meter to a 1 way unit and also to your main board.

As for size, I'm with slr - better to be safe than sorry. Interesting to read coomers inside knowledge tho'!

you have to ask yourself what is protecting what

Lets say the tails are feeding a cooker circuit on a 32A type b 60898 MCB for example. The MCB is the overcurrent protective device for the circuit, so Ib In Iz complies

the 100A BS1361 fuse is the shortcircuit protection, and 6 mm tails WILL handle the fault current required to blow this
