Coming across a few of these. Very small run of cable as cu is in kitchen just below bathroom but should be 10mm cable. Did the old cable used to be slightly bigger than the new stuff?

Stratplus, why do you think it should be 10mm cable? In certain conditions, small run and correct reference method 6mm will be ok for a 8.5Kw shower.

Worked it out to 10mm. Cable run is ok and distance but concerned about melted cable connector block.

When you say 'cable run is ok', what reference method is the cable run? Also how did you get to 10mm? 6mm clipped direct would give you 46A to play with and you need 37A (A big assumption of clipped direct though!).

If the reference method is ok then the melted connector cable block might be poor connections? Also what sort of connector block was used? What do you think the rating of the terminals are? Could be they were not suitable?

new connector block in shower. re terminate if cable ends are OK. assuming ref. method is C. 6mm is perfectly adequate for the load.

Clearly because it needs a larger cable ...... Right ?

Well, the connector block melted cos the connector block got too warm, innit. Maybe it got warm by itself. Maybe something else made it warm. Maybe all the atoms in it just decided to have a bit of a disco and bounce around a lot to that ol' Brownian beat. It's difficult to know.

show calculations

Ib 37amps
In 40amps
No factors to account for
Ref method c single phase
Table 4d2a
6mm will allow 46 amps
Volt drop 2.1

So 6mm ok

I was adding .725 on factors for rewireable fuse which would make it pull 55amps so would require 10mm.

Its protected with an old style mcb with the push button and for some reason ive taken that as a rewireable fuse. These breakers push in the same as rewireables.

If you came across an undersized shwr install on a replacement shwr and a board with push button breakers which isnt rcd protected should you change the board.
Can you get rcbo's that fit this kind of board.
I know regs say that shwr installs should be rcd protected.

clearly melted on the phase side, shwr casing in this area was black (white shwr). Shwr was knackered, prv operated. Took cover off to fit new prv to find melted block.
Prob a loose connection although shwr been in at least 8 yrs.
More likely a blockage on shwr outlet, causing heat in cable, which is why prv blew?? Told the shwr had been tripping b4.

This has all the makings of a classic.

Sorry what's the question again ?
I'm leaning towards the idea that the missing vowels in the shwr caused increased resistance resulting in the build up of heat at the cable terminations though.

This shower was clearly installed with a cable manufactured on the stroke of midnight 2007/2008 as the cable appears to be half old colours and half new.
