Hi everyone I have my am2 resit coming up and was wondering what size cable do you use from the wiring centre, to the programmer, and what size cable is used from the wiring centre to the thermostat. I thought it was 1.5, but wasn't sure.

Any answers will be much appreciated, thanks a lot.

The size of the cable is always dictated by the OCPD (fuse or mcb) value and its installation method (as in can it dissipate heat ) , in central heating you need to make sure it has enough cores for the purpose , ie a minimum of 4 core for room stat ( N , L , SL , CPC)

Okay thank u mate, the spur has a 3 amp fuse. Is there a calculation I can use to dicate the cable size?

i would say that the cable size is determined by the load, and then the OCPD is determined by the cable size. beg to differ.

it's a 3A fuse because the load is<3A. then the cable size can be anything that is rated at >3A according to the installation method. therefore even 0.5mm would usually suffice, but 0.75mm is the norm as it's usually flex.

Okay that's great cheers mate, what about the single core cables for the programmer and thermostat, what would the size be for them?

In the am2 all of the cables are supplied and a drawing is provided, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the drawing dictates what size of cable to use/what type and each cable is used once, its more being able to follow the drawing more than anything. I don't think any calculations are required on the day.

Thanks mate, that's reassuring appreciate it.

The cable size is dictated on the installation design drawing. If you are unsure you are encouraged to confirm with the assessor, you won't fail for asking as they would rather you do that than get it wrong.
