I have an idea, dont know if it will work though.

Who here has trouble estimating cable sizes? mainly larger ones?

Right here goes, get hold of a micrometer, measure the width of the cable and find out how many micrometers it is.

Now for the tricky bit, the formula to find out the CSA from its width? If its not possible, We are going to have to create a table the hard way by simply measuring with a micrometer cables which the size is know to keep it accurate.

for example

50mm2 - --- micrometers

75mm2 - --- micrometers

240mm2 --- micrometers

etc etc etc.

Something like that...

this should help

if you know the diameter, then you can calculate the csa. csa=(pi x dia/2 ) squared. this doesn't work with triangular cable. for that you need pythagoras.

Why not just measure some known samples with a vernier gauge and write it on your tool box with an indelible marker. I keep 2" samples of common sizes in my bag.

yep 3.14 x 0.5 x 0,5 = 0.785 sq.mm

i learnt that formula for 11+

I also keep short lenghts of knows sizes for comparison, makes it easy and takes the guesswork out of it.

i tend to read what it says on the drum

What's needed is something similar to what I have for gauging refrigeration pipe it's a flat template with half circles along it's outer edge mind you I would not like to go stuffing it into a box of cables, Chuckle
