So basically i have completed all my college courses and have passed everything, now i need to do my NVQ but i'm yet to get an apprenticeship.

Would I need to start an apprenticeship and be paid the horribly low wage and work my way up or would i be able to start an electricians mate job and just do my NVQ?

I'm 21 years old so would that do anything to the apprenticeship wage or would it still be very low?

Thank you :)

Alright mate , what qualifications have you achieved at college ? Amusing you have getting everything you need from the college I think what is going dictate is your personal circumstances. Obviously you'll get paid more as a sparkys mate but you might struggle to meet all the NVQ criteria and in regards to your career some firms only want time served sparks. I would suggest to try and get an position as an adult trainee or a well structured apprenticeship with a training provider such as JTL. Admittedly the money isn't great (about 200 a week to start then a pay rise every year last I, checked by year 4 its about 350) but you'll come out with all the qualifications and solid experience . I've just recently come off the tools and after finishing my apprenticeship to go into the design side of things and had to take a 5k pay cut so I know the feeling when i comes to wages but some times you gotta bite the bullet for it to work out in the long run. I would try and contact JIB firms directly and also contact JTL.

I'm 28, was working as a multi-trader specializing in plumbing and chippy work until August of last year, got offered a job with the electrical firm I am now working for, initially it was for a labourer but in the interview my boss asked if I was willing to go into training. As most of us know, the more tickets you've got the better your wage/the more secure your job is going to be so I jumped at the chance.

I missed the enrollment date for this year and am currently only on £7.50 an hour but even on a standard, 9 hours a day, 5 days week that works out to £337 before tax (until I start my NVQ I am subbying so 20% tax plus flat £13 NI a month) It's not great money by a long shot but given that in roughly 3 years once I've got my NVQ3 I'll be able to command at least £17.50 an hour from the same firm, these 3 (4 for my own stupidity) years are worth the scraping by.

If you've got the chance at an apprenticeship, jump at it and grasp with both hands! Especially if they are going to pay the costs fully which they probably will at your age. For myself my firm will front the costs then slip a little out of my pay packet each month to cover it, still entirely worth it.

Thanks for the pointer but the JTL training reference wasn't accompanied by any outbound links and it sits as being fairly relevant in the post so I've given it the benefit of the doubt.

Haha I can assure if not spam , I did a 4 year apprentice with my previous company with JTL and enjoyed it. Would I give it a ten out of ten.. not a chance. But I started apprenticeship in 2007 a year before a recession I was kept in work the whole time and got all my quals, with has served me well up to now. I agree though apprenticeship is the way to go which ever you do it.

looks like JTL training is the best option then? I'm not sure what it is exactly, will I have to travel to a JTL training place? Because I think on their website it says Birmingham is the closest to me and that's 2 hours drive away :(
