Hi all I'm looking for some advice recently i left a data cable installer apprenticeship cat5 to cabs etc (was a one year course level 3 at the end) to pursue an apprenticeship in eletrics (standard 3 year am2 at the end course) recently I've seen and heard alot of conflicting statements about what is the best path to take whats easiest pays the best etc.

My delima is this i have the opportunity to go back to my old data apprenticeship or take a fire and security one or stay where i am (i have only just started) i realise i may get slated a bit or told to do what i enjoy. But im also looking at it from a career point of view I'm an ex carpenter so want to pick the right path if I'm changing trades. Don't hold back what do you guys think.

Have you actually completed any of these courses or are you just jumping around between them at the moment and are being side tracked by yourself or other people
IMO in the long term you will probably gain more from following the electrical route
As for easiest and pays the best you only reap what you sow and you will have to take the rough with the smooth with any job

Carpenter is not a bad trade at all, my dad is one, my father in law is one, and so was Jesus and his father before him. What makes you want to leave it?

I don’t know much about the data, or the fire and security; but I feel if you did either of those, you’d still be looking up at us electrical gods in awe.

If it was me, I’d either stay a chippy or train to be a sparky.

I think i definitely end up getting aide tracked and believe the grass is greener. I think perusing the eletrical route would definitely allow me to do more.

Get asked that alot i used to say easier work for more money and less messy but on site today chasing i had a good laugh at myself. I think honestly i just like the technical side of eletrics and the challenge feels like the next logical step.

I think you're right in regards to looking up to electricians i hear fire and security and data boys tend to get looked down upon a bit by sparks 😂 from what ive heard anyway.

There’s a lot of people out there that think we get paid rock star wages for doing bugger all. Truth is, we all graft, day in day out.

If you’re half decent at maths and science you shouldn’t struggle with the technical side; and if you do? There’s plenty on here that can guide you in the right direction.

I started as a spark then moved into fire and security, mainly security.

The money is about the same but you maybe need to be more tech savvy as a lot of it is more network based. I personally prefer it but depends what you like.
