Best way to chase?

Just after everyone's opinion on the best way to chase cable drops and box's without destroying the wall too much

Seen my mate use an SDS hammer and the wall looked a right mess!

The stitch method looks pretty good, does anyone know where to get one of those drill guides?

You could use a wall chaser on brick/block walls, very dusty though.

option 1 wall chaser use mask entire house covered in dust
option 2 SDS drill go all over the place but quicker
option 3 use a scutch slower but cleaner and controlled.


I use option 3 and only revert to option 2 will stone build properties.

use a chaser but use it with a hoover that has a 110v socket built onto it. you then run a lead to the hoover and plug the chaser to that. works brill, and no dust!

it was few years ago, but it was a bosch hoover and a bosch chaser! all i remeber is that we had to keep changimg the diamond blades co the walls were made of brick that contained iron filings or something like that

I use a combination of chaser and scutch hammer and chisel. If you haven't used scutch before I wholeheartedly recommend it - revolutionary!

2 parallel cuts with an angle grinder then chip out the middle with a chisel.

I use a chasing tool with a good vac, very low levels of dust, still dust sheet the entire room. I use a 5in grinder with a dust extract hood, again very little dust ,the sds causes more when clearing the chase and box. With the boxes I go past the edges of the marked out box this is so you get the full 25mm cut all the way to the very corners of the back box hole.

Yeah that works fine on breeze block, but try it on the old black brick hilti chaser and hoover everytime for me, and chipper gun.

Can I ask what the difference between a scutch chisel and bolster chisel is, and why is it better?

Hilti chaser and vacuum here too!!

bolster is wide and flat, scutch is narrower and has "teeth" on the business end of the chisel, it penetrates so much better than the old "knock the wall down to remove 2 inches of plaster" bolster

the teeth give the direct pressure. if you imagine pepper potting something that you wanted to push through. not a technical answer i know but i am sure you get the jist of it.

Much, much better. The scutch combs rule, great for removing large amounts quick, and equally good at refined, light-touch shaping work - less 'gouging' that you get with bolster and cold chisels. And as the scutch has removable 'blades' (which are cheap as chips BTW) you can get a flat blades as well as combs, which can be handy. I also highly recommend a scutch hammer, which combines the two, and looks cool like some kind of rock climbing jobbie. Theres a thread on it in the tools forum somewhere....

the grief on the hands is far less as well. i have saved loads of time with it think my wholesalers charge about 2 quid for the replacement ends

i use my hilti chaser in fully furnished houses, the lady of the house usually looks like she's going to have a heart attack when i start bringing it all in, but they are over the moon within minutes when its back in the van and their lovely home is still intact.

I make more mess finishing the last couple of inches at the ceiling end. buying a hilti chaser and vac wont be the cheapest investment you'l ever make, but it sure is one the best.

Got the same set up well worth it, would recommend the hilti grinder extractor hood for the last couple of inches. People think what the hell when you start to bring in henrys ******* son

SDS hammer drill with chisel bit. When I chase the walls with one, you'd think I'd done it with an angle grinder. Trick is to cut a little at a time, then you don't get great chunks dropping out. I always draw a level line done the wall in pencil, then start at the bottom with the line in the middle of the chisel. To be honest it doesn't worry me if a big chunk does fall out, it's always easier to fill the chases in when that happens, it feathers in better (the plaster that is).
