" I want a price for some electrical work now mind I have not got much money"
"I cant pay that your too expensive" "You can buy a fuseboard for £90 bucks and yet charge £400-£500 to put it in no wonder you sparks are loaded"

"so what is the hurry to get this light put up then" I ask
"Well he said I have a painter decorator to paint the lounge and hall and it is going to cost me £600"(cash)
Well I said he probably got the paint out of the work and if he had to pay for it funny enough it would be £90 so a clear £510 profit in the pocket so tell you what instead of me buying a CU/earthing cable clamps testing the whole house issueing a test certificate and fixed the odd fault for nowt then get paid by cheque I will paint your house for £550.

Whats your point he said

People will pay daft money for a bit of paint put on the wall that will last 3-5 years yet fight tooth and nail to get a CU fitted for less money than the painter that will last about 30-35 years just like the one is already fitted.

Glad I got that out

Yes feel a lot better I may be 51 and I am not grumpy but no matter how long I do this I will never figure out a customer who says "What £150 in my day that kept a family of 6 alive for 3 months and there was still money left over for my dads 5 Woodbines every day. I know I should treat these fools with the contempt they deserve but I actually believe in customer focus but it is minorities like this who I can only put down to one word Selfish.

Mind I do get a bit of fun pointing out that its ok to pay £20,000 for a car or £900 for an oven but £400-£500 for something thats put in the cupboard under the stair and then add but of course electrical safety is not what it is all about it is down to what youre priorities that you have to deal with.

No one wants to pay for something that's not fun. I can understand that. What really gets me, is when you are telling somebody, unequivocally, that their installation is unsafe in some way, and they give you the old 'oh yea, heard it all before, cowboy' attitude.

Its even worse when you charge them vat they seem to think you can just drop the price for cash

The problem we have is that in every town around the country, there always seems to be an electrician who will work for nothing. He will probably cut corners but hes cheap.

Every other trade in the same area will 99 times out of 100 stick to there prices, so they don't have anyone cheap to do the job.

Quoted a guy for an alarm years ago phoned me up and said I am surprised that you are still in business charging those prices got someone cheaper than you and without the attitude (I said if you get a cheaper quote than me take it cos I can go any cheaper without cuting corners)
Six months later the guy who i put the alarm in next door to him called me out he said he was told his alarm was not working no such thing I said then left yep you guessed who was waiting for me outside and said since you are here you can check mines out as the Police have instructed me to decommission the alarm due to too many false alarms.

Me said I think I will pass on that and why dont you get the guy who put it in to fix it Cant get a hold of him he said well stop wasting my time I said and get a real alarm engineer to look at it
the last view I had of him was him screaming and shouting at me as I drove away yes he wasted my time but boy did I feel good about it

had it, quoted for work, turned up on a sat to do said work........................................wait for it..........unloaded tools, just about to start and the old, your price is a bit too much, another bloke said he could do it for 60 quid less and could i match it?!......................i then started to load tools bak into van without saying anything.....the customer then asked what the sketch was, i said the price was what was quoted, thanks for wasting my time, u better get the other bloke to do the work! As i got in the van he said that he reconsidered and would pay what i had originally asked, i said no thanks and drove off..........................felt good apart from wasting my time and a bit of diesel!
and i was 150 worse off at the end of the day!
still, it felt good though!
