HI folks,

I'm on the management committee of the block of flats where I live.

We've got ancient garage electrics and want to rewire. I have a question about what specs to use for the bus cable.

Situation is this.

We have 45 Garages spread out over with max distance from cable entry to the property about 150m.
We'd like each garage to have at least:
- Strip light
- Twin socket set
- Motor for electric doors (Quite a few of the older residents are fans)
- Have each garage on an RCD so hopefully any issues get stopped within the individual garages rather than tripping other units.

I'd also like to understand what additional cable spec would be required to allow for slow charging of electric vehicles (so guessing 2 maybe 4 kv) plus the above?

Help greatly appreciated.

Hi Scrummy. I think you would need a site visit from a spark to assess the existing supply and your proposed specifications. They would then be able to give you options. Cable specs will vary according to loads, distances and external factors.

Hi Alan,

I was more looking for a rough guide as a start when I walk sparkies around so any ideas would be helpful.

Cheers,

Probably still too many unknowns. Likely that there are some on here with experience of similar scenarios and up to date knowledge of EV chargers & their requirements. Good luck 😁

No where near enough detail here to give any sort of educated guess I’m afraid. Do you anticipate 50 cars charging in the evening in the future at each garage? Do you intend on installing a consumer unit in each garage? Are these all desperate buildings or a large communal garage? If electric vehicles are going to be an issue then I’d suggest getting a few larger chargers installed rather than everyone trickle charging.
