Edit ; when you have time have a read of the OSG chapter 6 and Scadden is a brill book for the theory - believe there is a new edition out now as well - well worth buying to get you thru your exams.

soo what you are saying is the total power is 72A this then needs to be shared with 3 phases witch brings it to 24A per phase?
 
calculate the desing current w/1.732 x 400 and that will supply current per phase (is what i should of said) unless there is a pf involved

To find Ib = Watts / (voltage x root 3 x PF) = 50,000 / (400 x 1.732 x 1) = 72.17A PER PHASE!!!
 
thanks lenny! thats a lot of amps per phase. so i would need to find a cable tht can carry 72A per phase taking the volt drop into account! i still recon 25mm 5 core would do the trick? can u help me work it out properly? all these post are confusing
