Like somone said, if its 1 T&E yes i would agree crimps would be good but how many lights do you see with just one cable?
If you use a joint box and make the hole bigger once you have made good the hole and painted it again how will access for inspection and test be possible as all connections need to be accesable for inspection once done.

I think we should design a new way for the makers of lights to do better connections behind lights. I want 60% of the profits tho :D
