Discuss Deep power surge last night I noticed, could this be the cause? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Last night while laying down, I heard my air purifier and a little fan that was going almost cut off from a power surge but then it went back to functioning normal. It did it once more about 1 minute later and then I never heard it again the reset of the night.

Also yesterday when I got home, I noticed there wasn't a power outage (because my oven would reset, clocks, etc) but my central A/C had reset back to 75 degrees when we keep it at 68. Again, no sign of any power outage but the surge was deep enough to (I guess) reset my thermostat.

Could there be something possibly wrong with my heating and air unit causing these surges?
Could my outdoor lighting have nicks in the wiring causing the surges?
Could outlets be overloaded somewhere to cause the surges?
Are there any tests I can conduct to make sure my outlets aren't overloaded?

Any help would be much appreciated!!! =)

In terms of the DNO supply fluctuations you'd have to record it

Other checks would be L-N loop impedance and voltage drop under load at the points to see if voltage is dropping

Outlets overloaded- you'd just visually inspect the outlet to see what appliances are plugged in/connected

Final circuit overload you can clamp at the distribution board

If you have a drop in voltage ("brown out") or a momentary loss of power it is anybody's guess as to what will or will not reset.

Unless you have access to a clamp style ammeter (and know how to use it safely) then most tests would require the help of an electrician. to see what sort of a load your various bits of equipment is drawing, and what impact that has on your supply voltage.

Equally the problem might have been external to your property (e.g. fault on an overhead line somewhere).

Do you notice lights flickering when the A/C switches on/off, etc?

If some things are being affected but not others, there could be a loose connection somewhere, perhaps on one of the 2 supply hots, so only one half of your circuits are affected.
