Hi,

Just wanted to ask just for knowledge purposes, a question regarding automatic power disconnection.

Im due to start working on a porter cabin site, one of the things they want us to do is put a system in place where for example if a kettle is switched on, the power to the cooler is switched off. This is because the max power generated by the generator is 3kw. So they don't want a scenario where the appliances exceed that. So in order to alleviate this, they want power to be switched off to other appliances when one appliance is drawing too much power.

Can anyone recommend a relay or a device?

Just to add, I'm wiring up porter cabins to be used on site, its partially powered by 12dc battery and a 3kw generator. Will have a consumer unit and fcu connections and sockets etc. The lights will be led powered by the 12v battery.

Small units with 3kW Generators often have lower power kettles on FCU with the bases fixed down. No need to fuss with switching based on power demand.

Kit them out with lower powered appliances, this will be a far cheaper alternative to trying to create a load monitoring and shedding system.

You can buy automatic shedding systems that fit in a CU, they are available in France not sure about the UK though.

You could put a changeover switch on the wall, turn 1 way for kettle other way to power cooler etc.
It’s a simple and cheep solution.

This sounds like best idea to me.

Certainly seems the cheapest solution, only problem is trying to remember to switch it back over after using one or the other.

Ok then, they might change their mind when they see the prices!

How many appliances does this need to control?
Are the appliances hard wired or plugged in? Does it need to dynamically control the load, or just prevent more than one appliance being used at a time?
Do you know what all of the appliances will be?

The shedder itself will only switch about 1amp so relays are needed as per this diagram, this one by Hager.
