Exploding halogen lamp

Hi all , not been on for a while . Has anyone had problems with
the low energy halogen globe lamps shattering whilst in use .
A customer of mine has had one blow and was very frightened
by this and asked me to check to see what had caused it .
She had three of these fitted in a light fitting , open shades , above
her dining table and one literally blew , with fragments of glass
going all over the table and her . Fortunately she was not injured
but was well shook up . I checked out all the obvious things like
voltage, condition of lampholder etc but all seemed ok , the other two
I have removed and I have replaced them all with standard tungsten
tungsten type because she is afraid it might happen again .
The halogen lamps appear to be unbranded and I have suggested I fit
replacement lamps from a known manufacturer .
The lamp that blew was a 28watt BC globe , any thoughts ?

If there are slight defects in manufacture of the glass envelope then entrapped air in the glass can cause pressure in the lamp and shatter that glass.
Liquid or dirt on the outside of a halogen capsule can create different temperatures over the surface that heat stress the glass and can cause cracking.
It is also possible that if the filament melts through the surrounding glass if the outer globe is not an inert atmosphere then the filament can rapidly vapourise and as the outer globe is not designed for pressure it could break, this is less likely as the outer envelope should contain the glass if this happens.

You have answered your own question there...cheap chinese junk. I remember a batch of halogen fittings years back where the supplied lamp exploded on first switch on in about 50% of the fittings,very embarrassing if the client was watching!

Yet again the perils of cheap lamps. This is going to get worse with all the cheap LED replacement lamps starting to be used. Most of these are probably going bang as I type this. Daz
