Hi

Does the regs require all fixed wiring for example to a shed (armored cable) to be buried? Or can it be fixed above ground on posts, I dont think it can be simply laid on the edge of the garden all the way to the shed, reason I ask that there is trees in the garden and hence the roots would get in the way.

cheers

KC

Yes can be fixed above ground, but correct cable needs to be used and adequetly supported to prevent stress and strain on cable...

Having hunted the 17th edition I cannot find anywhere where its says this, so where did you find it stated it is OK and at what hieght above ground should it be run?

Chapter 52 (selection and errection of wiring systems) might be your best bet...
Plus If I remember rightly underground cables must be laid deep (minimum of 600mm) this might be in the regs.
Reg 522.8 deals with mechanical stress

Reg 132.7 that suitable consideration should be given ref choice of cable and installation.

522.8.4 + 5228.5 Cables that are not supported continuously due to thier installation method are supported by suitable means at approriate intervals to prevent cable damage + Mechanical stress/strain.

Section 7.1 Refrence methods

No specific height as the designer/installer you need to make judgement on individual enviroments/ dangers present etc... (These will vary from locations...

I stated ok, due to a previous job in which I checked with ELECSA tech on as like you i couldnt find a specific reg that said yes or no, their response was, can you find a specific reg that says that you cant.... (They quoted regs for ensuring correct cables to be used and protecting cables from external influences and stress etc... and said that a common sense approach needs to be applied as the 17th edition is to be used as a guide and cannot possible cover every scenario specifically, its up to the installer to access each installation on its on merits/dangers.)

In the mines, they used to be hung up on in house manufactured hooks,if there were no hooks available, they were hung up on the floor,(damn tripping hazard I reckon

Investing in the guidance notes is essential - are you a sparky and a member of a scheme?
