a chum as asked me to help with a loft convertion, in the area a small shower room is to be installed, consisting of a toilet, sink and shower cubical.....does this need an extract fan and if so what type? The area is approx 3m x2m, ..given a low ceiling height, the fan would be accessible from any position,. the circuit to the fan is from a lighting circuit , fed by a 16th edition consumer unit..should a selv unit be installed if so, where do you install the transformer??

16th edition consumer unit??? are you saying only the sockets are covered by RCD. All the new low voltage cables need to be protected by RCD, that includes the lights, sockets and fan transformer feed. Also, if you are a competant person you have the extraction rates in the on-site guide and should know that any enclosed Shower/WC room has to have fan extraction and that the work needs to be signed off as it is a special location being a shower room.
The transformer should be outside the room or in a cupboard where it is protected but accessible ( in my opinion) as when it burns out someone will need access to replace it.

Thanks miner69er for the info , looks like an additional consumer unit then and the transformer surface next to the tp isolator, its a small loft area with no cupboards, still we will have to carry out some updating, the split load unit has no eqopotential earthing,,,, odd!!!!
