Hello everyone,

I'm a service engineer from Malaysia and come across a simple problem. I work with instrumentation and the problem I face with is regarding a Dissolve Oxygen Sensor. The sensor is used to measure oxygen in a sewage treatment plant by means of chemical reduction in its membrane and sends an electrical signal (4-20mA) to the controller.

Somehow as soon as the sensor touch the body of water the reading shows faults i.e. reading > 20mA. I suspect there's an electrical leakage in the tank which is causing the sensor to malfunction. The tank itself has other electrical equipment such as a mixer, decanter, etc. I have tested the sensor probe in an external water and reading is normal.

My question :-
1) How do I confirm that there is indeed an electrical leak. ( Aside from connecting the water in the tank using a multimeter and grounding it)
2) What can I do to remove the leakage it self?
