Discuss Fitting a 16amp plug to a 13 amp in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

It depends on the rating of the cable whether the items needs/ is suitable for 16a supply as you will be removing the protection provided by the fuse and relying on mcb o4 rcbo controlling the circuit for overload protection.

Bear in mind that 16A sockets are sometimes protected by 20A OCPD, possibly C20. So the cable needs to be sufficient to withstand clearing a fault on a C20.

Items with 0.75mm² flex would be adequately protected on a B16, and in continental Europe they would be connected with unfused plugs to socket outlets on 16A radials. I don't think it is adequate for a C20.

There are other cases which are definitely no-go on a B16 either, e.g. an appliance with a 0.5mm² flex that would be fused down to 3A in a 13A plug, and unfused multi-socket extensions with 1.25mm² flex where the total rated current must not exceed 13A but the plug fuse is relied upon to limit this.
