Hi guys,
I am new to testing and would like some advice please, could you tell me which of these you would choose and why, Fluke 1653B or Megger MFT 1553? after looking at them on the web i prefered the look of the megger but the word "fluke" almost epitomises testing.

I found the Fluke 1653B for £815 inc VAT and P&P, it also comes with a free Tek 265 digital multimeter apparently worth £35.95

I found the Megger MFT 1553 for £674 inc VAT and P&P, it comes with a free Megger DCM330 Fork Multimeter apparently worth £95

I know the fluke is quite a bit more but as sparks we all know that trying to save money on our tools is not always a good idea;) although if anyone knows where i can find these testers cheaper then please post that aswell, Thanks.

How can Fluke be the name for testing, when Megger are a trade name which is now frequently used as a slang word for an insulation resistance test? Go for the Megger, I've used one for 6 years now and it's never let me down, the same cannot be said for the few Flukes I've used over the year.... The Megger offers much better value for money, and is much simpler to use, :-)

I was a supervisor in charge of testing teams on a major commercial construction project in Wales. we had about 30 hired test kits in all.

flukes we had more faulty units (about 4)

the biggest problem we had with the meggers was the test probes, the little bars that secure the crocodile clips on were prone to breaking and giving suspect/innacurate readings.

so IMO, if you get a fluke, make sure you keep your receipt and anything else that applies to your warranty. if you get a megger invest in a second set of high quality probes

thanks for the advice guys, think i'll definitely give the megger a go, n thanks for the info on the probes uksel i'll invest in a quality set.

megger every day!!! i use a dilog 9083p thingy !! its good and does job but it aint a megger!!! (got it cheap off a polish chap who was returing back home with his millions, however it was 6 months old and was brand new still plus with warranty and till reciept could not go wrong!! )

But if you want a Megger MFT1502, which does the same but without Bluetooth and I think auto-RCD testing, you can get one from RS for £510 ex vat... But if you want all bells and whistles then they seem like a very good price! :)
