I have been asked recently if I could fit somebody an external key switch for there garage door - As at the moment they have to go through there house to push the available buttons on the unit inside the garage.

I told them this is possible, but my query is finding a suitable IP rated key switch to achieve this?

Any body out there ever had to do something similar, if so what did you use?

Those switches aren't particularly reliable, and can be broken into or broken off the wall and easily bypassed. Remote fob is the way to go, especially as there's emergency access through the house.
My own car has the fob fixed with a double sided pad to a piece of trim under the instrument cluster, and if I push the button at the last corner before my house, the door is open when I get there.

Open the door with the key, or open the box with a screwdriver and push the microswitch by hand.
Don't think the house insurance company will be very impressed.

Deciding wether it meets the minimum security requirements for the home owner is down to the home owner.
it may for all we know have a dead bolt on the front of the door for security.

The innards of the switch in nicebutdim's link are only secured by a single screw, but IIRC, the key barrel engages with a flange in the back of the housing when in the centre position, so you can only remove the front with the key in and turned.
Doesn't stop anyone just swiping the box of the wall with a sideways hammer blow and then accessing the wires, though.

It's a euro cylinder, so I'd expect it can only be removed (under normal circumstances) with key inserted and turned.
