Discuss Height of consumer units in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

regarding sockets- I know it states in the osg about sockets being at 450mm to the bottom, but is this purely for access reasons?

This isn’t an electrical reg ... it’s a building reg ... Part M to be precise. Lots of part M isn’t relevent to sparks BUT I do recommend you download it and be familiar with its contents ..

It also says regarding switches , sockets heights etc... a way of achieving this... I think they share the same authors. :)

I’ve done quite a few new builds where we were given special dispensation by building control to have different heights to that shown in part M..
Wasn’t your run of the mill type house but as said the stated heights is just a suggestion not an instruction.

I went to a commercial property a few years ago to replace the meter and was told it was located above the suspended ceiling. Stepladder out, lifted and moved panel out of the way and peered into the void.
Nothing to see.....no cut out, no meter.
“You sure it’s up here?”
“Yes...look up!”
I did and was greeted by the cut out and meter staring down at me having been mounted on the original ceiling!!!
In case of an electrical emergency...remove ceiling...cut seals and remove fuse!

I think (or thought) the building regs (unlike the BBB) are statutory documents and dimensions given are not 'recommendations' but dimensions to be complied with?
