Whilst it's clearly aimed at the DIY market, i.e. is not a calibrated, professional tool, it does a lot for very little money, and with a 2-year guarantee, you can't go far wrong, so long as you're not expecting precision. Good reviews on Amazon.

There are cheaper ones available;

I've had one, not the above, for over 20 years mainly for measuring air temperatures but have used it on cable connections in Commercial buildings and found hot spots.

I used something like this eears ago to check for loose connections on a some pretty heavy sub mains on a big site. There had been a fire in one of them, so everything got checked when it was loaded up.

I don't know if it'll just sit in my van and never get used.

I thought a branded name would be a better choice.
At DIY level, I imagine the badge makes little difference, as they all originate from the same factory in China, the only real difference being the casing.

If you were buying a Flir, I'd agree with your thought process. Or the Fluke Ti9 that @DAvid Prosser linked to... circa £2k of kit!

I might get the Ethos one. From CEF?
I’ve got my test kit and PAT from Ethos, so I’ll have a matching set.:)

Has anyone any experience with these?

Keep being tempted, not exactly something that will break the bank but could end up paying for itself in a few hours on a breakdown.

Occasionally you find a warm object (36C) that keeps moving - Reflection of your bare arm , on some shiny surface -at just the right angle .
(Those ghost hunters have a lot to answer for)
