I have a client with a large garden (approx 40m by 20m) that wants lighting. He's not to sure how bright he wants it at the moment or what style, (he's leaving that for me to come up some ideas for his consideration) although the fittings need to in keeping with a barn conversion. The lights will be controlled by a pir with a wireless manual override. There will be no lights fitted to the barn itself. So what light fitting options have people had experience with or recommend and how should i calculate how many fittings to install to achieve a good overall light spread?

Depends on the layout of the garden, buildings, trees etc. You can get some good effects with bollards around paved areas, up-lighters with rocks placed around them and spotlights for trees and buildings.

Echo the above - is it one large lawn (big floodlights in each corner for midnight croquet) or a Capability Brown with pathways and box hedges (uplights, bollards etc)

Not really much in the way of trees or patios/paved areas.Generally lawned with a feature well which could probably be highlighted. The garden is to the front and side of the property in full view of passing traffic so would'nt want silly bright

Lighting for Gardens, Letchworth - google them and send the link to the customer. Not the cheapest BUT as the installer you get a lower price than the customer sees and their techies are great.
