Alright chaps, how does this sound?

Dear.........

It is with great compunction that I am giving you this notice of resignation. I have enjoyed the majority of my time at the company however I feel It is time to leave. I will work two working weeks’ notice unless this is of major inconvenience to you or it causes any major problems with the work schedule. Please note I will still be available as a sub contractor.

I very much hope to see and work with you again and I thank you for the time in which you have employed me.

Never written one before so i have no idea what you are supposed to put in one!

Any input much appreciated because its going in today.

Congratulations. First use of the word "compunction" I have ever seen written down. lol.

It's fine. It doesn't matter too much what it says as you should be giving it to your boss in person, explaining what it is and your reasons to him verbally. The letter is just to make it official. Always best to do thing face to face giving your employer the respect they deserve, especially if you intend to subby to them in the future.

How about:

"Dear ******,

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of my intention to resign my position with the [The Company name]. I feel working here has been a positive experience and whilst there is regret at moving on, I feel this is the right decision for me professionally so that I may gain further experience elsewhere.

It is my intention to work out my agreed notice period and thus [insert date] will be my last working.

I would like to offer to make my services available in the future in a sub-contractor role should you find yourself in such need, and I would very much look forward to working you with again.

Sincerely

[One very ****ed off former employee]"

This way you are not burning a bridge. The way the first is written is obvious there is something wrong and it comes across very personal and insincere. Whether you ever take work off them as a subby is another matter, but always leave the door open because they may offer you some when things are tight.

Resignation letters should be short, sweet and to the point, never personal and always leaving doors firmly open.

Cheers OS i intendes for it to be as formal/non emotive as possible. However years of resentment is hard to hide.

And regardless of what they think of the letter, the turd in the kettle will probably seal the deal....

Thanks for the letter though in all seriousness ill probably use it!

I think Outspoken's letter is much more appropriate, but if you are really not happy then do not go overboard with the regret and previous enjoyment.
I might say something about contractual notice period, just to show you are obeying the forms.

Good luck, hope it goes well.
Look to the future.

To be honest (possible tin hat moment) My contractly notice period is 1 month. The statutory notice period in the uk is 1 week i think.

They never renewed my contract at renewal time last year due to arguments etc. However the work conditions did change slightly (again without any acknowledgement with a contract). Ive said i will work two full working weeks notice HOWEVER if that was to cause any problems with the rota or jobs we have booked in then i will work on as i don't want to cause any disruption.
