Live Conductors..??

Are we now classing Neutral as a live conductor?

Reason for this is that on the Scheldule of Items tested (page 4 of Periodic Inspection Report), it asks whether the "insulation resistance between live conductors" has been tested.

Just wondering whether this refers to three phase circuits (L1-L2 etc) or single phase circuits (L-N)

Yup, L & N are both live. L was live and is now line...which is live.

I even treat Mr "down to" Earth as a real live wire untill proven otherwise

Neutral is the return path for the current in a circuit so is a live conductor, whereas the earth conductor should only carry current under fault conditions. (Sorry for the sucking of eggs)

40 live conductors i would say

4x 3 phases (12 cables)
2x 3 phases +n (8 cables)
4x ring circuit (16 cables)
2 x lighting (4 cables)

I got a very similar question when I sat the exam. Just add up the number of line and neutrals.

4 x tp motors = 12
2 x tp+n motors = 8
4 x single phase rings = 16
2 x single phase radials = 4

Total = 40

40 by my reckoning, although the ring circuits are a bit subjective...

Part 2 - Definitions....... Live Conductor = A conductor or conductive part intended to be energised in normal use, including a neutral conductor but, by convention, not a PEN conductor.

Maybe i should know better....But aint a neutral only live with a load connected to it....or has it been Reclassified?

It's always been a live conductor since I've been doing it...

It's designed to carry current in normal operation, although I do agree with you that unless there is a load connected between line and neutral that no current will flow.

Definately a live conductor as i found out when i held on to a neutral that was being nicked off another circuit , ouch
