Hi Guys newbie here looking for advice.

My electric shower, Mira advanced thermostatic atl, has stopped working. When I flick the wall switch the lights on the shower do not come on and none of the buttons do anything.

I've opened the front cover and used a mains tester screwdriver to test the live\brown wire and there is power.

I don't see any obvious burn marks on the main board.

I tested various other components on the board and nothing else seems to have power.

Is there something else I can check or do I need to call one of the Mira Engineers (£160)?

thanks

You shouldn't be messing with the electrical installation in what is classed as a special location.

The tester you used is basically a waste of space and can be very dangerous, your best bet would be to call an Electrician to test the circuit feeding your shower is sound.

If the Electrician proves the circuit, and can't see any obvious fault on the shower, that will be the time to give the MIRA help desk a shout.

You may have voided any warranty by poking around in the gubbins of the shower, but as I said earlier the tester you used will prove nothing in the long run.

your tester driver can only determine the presence of the L.not the N. ( apart from all sparks' loathing of such testers ). You may have lost the N feed and my first suspect would be the switch/isolator. either a burnt out switch or burnt connection. with the MCB/fuse disabled for that circuit, open up the switch and have a look. failing which, a visit by an electrician is the next move.

1. Do not use a mains tester screwdriver unless you are tired of living, seen them go bang, isolate the shower at the wall until you have had someone look at it properly as it may be a fire risk.

2.You could have a bid on the below and then ask a competent electrician/appliance technician to come in and change some parts over for you. (assuming it all still works, ask the seller!) The shower will have a number of printed circuit boards, including a relay board and also a transformer, one or multiples have probably given up the ghost.

3. Get an electrician to replace the shower like for like, in the long run this may be the most effective solution depending on age.

Understood on the tester and the messing about when I'm not a professional.

That said, the isolator switch on the wall is 45a 250v. I have a different brand 45a 240v switch. If I change the switches around would the difference in 10v cause an issue?

That only means the switch is rated at 250 Volts A/C. It wont make an iota of difference unless the existing switch is to put bluntly Knackered, even so you are not experienced enough to go changing a switch of that type, or any switch come to that. Please do yourself and your family a favour and get an Electrician in to look at the problem.
It might well be that the switch has burnt out terminals, an Electrician will need to carry out what is called "the safe isolation procedure" using specialist tools, instruments and the required training to carry out this work, something you shouldn't be tampering with.

It is quite common to forget to connect the connector with Mira advanced. Make sure the small multi pin plug is plugged in that hangs off the front cover into the female socket on the shower front before you call Mira. Also check your installation instructions very carefully to make sure you have commissioned it properly there is a sequence to it.

Seen the Mira pin connector come loose plenty of times. Safest bet is to get a qualified electrician in. Also as other people's have said them mains screwdriver testers can be dangerous throw it in the bin. Good luck though

Ok, the mains screwdriver tester is binned. I have a non contact voltage detector now.

I opened up the isolator switch and there is indeed a burnt area around the L feed terminal. It looks like the L wire might have contacted the earth terminal too as there is a scorch mark on the side of that as well, right where the L wire would have sat.

It is possible a simple replacing of the switch might resolve the issue?

Is damage to the internals of the shower likely?

Those things are about as much good as hand brake on a rowing boat.

Hi - reckon you've answered this question your good self. Next question is it time to replace it? Perhaps a pic would help :)

replacing the switch is you 1st option . is it a wall switch or a pull cord type? the shower is unlikely to have suffered any damage. due to the high loading, it's essential that your terminations in the switch are good. if cable is burnt at the end/s cut back to get clean copper. if in doubt, call in a local spark.

Sorry Wilko, I can’t seem to upload any pictures. It’s giving me an error.

Telectrix - It’s a wall mounted cooker switch, possibly (?) not ideal for a bathroom but it’s at the back of a deep recessed cupboard.

I’ll change it round this evening after work, making sure I have fresh copper in each of the terminals
