more than 1 rcd?

Hello,

I am replacing a consumer unit in a house which has been divided into flats.

It is a TT system and has a 100ma rcd main switch before the distribution board which feeds the 3 flats each protected by a 40a 30ma rcbo. (located ground floor hallway)

does the consumer unit in each flat need another set of 30ma rcds to protect each circuit or would normal mcbs be sufficient as the board is already fed from 40a 30mA rcbo!

am i right in thinking theres no way of setting up any discrimination anyway?

It would be far better if the existing main switch was replaced for a 100ma time delayed type ,and the rcbo's were replaced for mcb's, and each flat was provided with rcbo's for final circuits...that way a fault in a flat wouldnt neccessitate a trip to the intake to reset.....As it stands if you are just relacing the cu in the flat there is no point in providing additional RCD's as the RCBO at the intake cover the whole flat...not very satisfactory though.
40A??.....hope they are not planning on having a 9kw shower and a new range in the kitchen

ah thanks for your advice, yea think as you say mcbs at the intake and rcbo's for the final circuits would be a much better set-up! i'l have to check what i've got to work with and come to a decision! thanks again

That would be dependent on wheather the sub-main feeds require 30mA protection (T&E concealed in walls etc.)
