Hi there, I have recently had an issue where there was a power cut in the village we found out that a pylon had blown. When the power came back on it caused a surge around two properties that we own in the village causing the circuit boards on our boiler to blow and the till and boiler in our pub to blow which needed replacing. Obviously, this was very costly and now I need to find out how I go about putting surge protection on both the properties to stop this happening again. Also, I would like to know if anyone has any advice about claiming some of the costs back from the distribution company, are they at fault here or is this pretty common?

Our pub is 3 phase and the house which is further down the street and not attached to the pub is single phase, any advice on what is needed for the surge protection would be much appreciated (preferably the cheapest option, as long as it works!)

claiam off your insurance . then let them fight the DNO.

I used to use SPDs on commercial installs, been a long time since that period, but if I was you I would consult with Furse you can google Furse surge protection devices plenty of info to peruse there, hope this helps, The one I used were Furse and were installed to cover the whole installation, not individual pieces of equipment.

The DNO here do have a claim form you can ask for to fill in in such an event I don't know what it is like around your way. Surge protection is not really cheap. Normally you would have Type 1 and Type 2 in line with each other. However Schneider do a SPD which combines the both. You need an electrician obviously to install and specify. But as post No. 3 our learned @Pete999 has observed there is Furse who could assist. Looking at this recently for a business the required spec, just the SPD devices were costed at £400 if I remember correctly. Then there is the install. So I imagine you would be looking at around £1500. Compared with the loss already made...does lightning strike twice?

Your insurance company may require you to fit SPDs in case of further surges otherwise they may not pay out in the future. Would be worth having a chat with them.

If two or more properties have been affected then do some door knocking and ask the neighbours. There can be a very rare isue called ferroresonance that can cook stuff when the power comes back on.

We install them on 90% of new installs/replacement distribution boards mainly in the MCCB boards this together with lighting protection nearly all manufactures do them but we fit Eaton.
