Hello. I would be grateful for some advice. We are a small charity providing singing and dancing classes for disabled people. We hire a room at a local community centre and we have a pianist who plays an electric keyboard (a Yamaha PSR500). The community centre are asking to provide a PAT certificate for the keyboard. I can see the importance of this but, clearly, we don't want to spend more than a few £ on this.

Can I test the item myself (I am a reasonably competent DIYer)? My brother-in-law is a qualified TV engineer, could I ask him to do it? Would he be liable if it subsequently caught fire? Or do I need to find a general electrician?

You need to find someone with the correct equipment to test the appliance. If you take it to someone I can't see it being more than a tenner for a quick test on it.

from what i can see, the keyboard is supplied through a mains adapter/PSU. all you can do is test the mains lead as PAT and a visual inspection of the adapter ( no cracks or damage visible). as sintra said, if this is the only item you have for testing, taking it into a local sparks is the most economical way.

Thanks guys. I hadn't realised there was a piece of equipment needed for this. I'll check out the local electrical shop, making sure I get a certificate.
