Hello, need help understanding RMS, i have a power amp that says its 240w rms into 8 ohms, what does RMS mean? is there a formula for this?
how would could i test the amp to see if it has a balanced out put?
thanks for help

R.M.S. Stands for route mean square , and this the output of the the amp. , )
If your amp has more than one channel the output will be quoted as per channel or total output.

As Bugsy correctly says RMS is the way amp power is usually quoted and for a sine wave is about 0.707 of the peak value. In simpler terms it give the equivalent power an alternating current as if it were DC.

It also the way mains voltages are normally specified so for 230V the peak voltage is actually somewhat higher.

If you want formulas try wiki

Dammit, you beat me. I had two years of working in hi-fi testing and inspection too.... :(
