Hi all,

I have 2x 2kw electric heaters I need to run power to - ~17a total. My plan is to use 2.5mm SWA (might be a bit light normally, but it's only ever going to be used when it's cold, being that it's there to supply heaters), I'll protect this with a 20a mcb

I need to run this from my detached garage to the patio area where the heaters are.

Garage is currently on a RFC with the hall and lounge on the same ring, 2.5 SWA carries power from the house to the garage - the ring is on a 32a MCB as normal. As I understand it I can't (shouldn't) put a downstream 20a MCB for the heater supply on one leg of a 32a RFC.

My plan is to pop a new 20a RCBO in the CU, move the garage SWA supply over to that (so breaking it apart from the existing RFC), which will provide adequate protection of for the existing 2.5 SWA that runs to the garage.

Then, in the garage I can leave the existing 6a mcb (lights) in place, and replace the existing 16a mcb (for a couple of sockets) with a new 20a MCB, which will then supply the existing two sockets and both heaters via the new 2.5SWA I will run to the patio.

Is that all right and proper?

NB I'm aware that if I were to run both heaters and at the same time plug in and use power tools in the garage I could easily exceed 20a... but I'm not going to be in the garage if I'm sat under the heaters in the garden!

Also should I form a new RFC to incorporate the garage sockets and the heaters? Or just run them as two radials from the shared mcb?

Thanks in advance for words of wisdom :)
