Hello everyone. I have a recurring problem with using kettles in our house.
We have to buy new ones regularly (every few months) as after a while they start to trip our 40A 30 mA circuit breaker. The kettle trips the switch as soon as the kettle is sat on its base (without being turned on).

The problem is not isolated to sockets in the kitchen. Take it arond the house and the same thing happens. I don't understand why one day it's fine then the next it becomes useless. This last kettle is only a few weeks old!

I would really appreciate your comments/advice.

Is the Kettle base subject to getting damp, over filling, condensation etc?

I have a similar problem here in Spain, and it's always the kettle at fault. The "cal" seems to be the cause, and as soon as the element furs up, the circuit trips. I buy a new kettle every few months, they're cheap enough...that's probably the reason, they are cheap crap.
I haven't thought it out logically, as to why it affects the circuit, it just does...and a new kettle fixes the problem, for a while.

Hi,
First, never and never sub-estimate my knowledge experience please, and have patience on this Science.
This problem come always from of Insulation Resistance of Circuits, Loads...) and to be sensitive (in your case) if, it's used for all Circuits on Electrical Panel like an general Breaker what is big mistake because many Loads beck their sensitive protection from the Power Line to Earth Protection when appear defective problem also, ask an Electrician to check the Earth Protection for your house and the new and old I.D's (Interrupter Differential in your case 40A/30mA) in comparison with another I.D and see, RCD, time and current with Electrical Tester to see the factory parameters of I.D's. Use Schneider, ABB, Hager or other whom professional people trust many years in areas where you live or work also, this I.D's have warranty term, minimal 1 year. And last, if the kettle is made in Asia you must buy many per year because are made where children's are used to be abused for make this domestically things with many fails just to be sold.

I am paranoid about getting the base damp etc. Always fill away from the base. The base does not seem to be the issue, Tripping happens when the kettle returns to t1he base.
As for calcium carbonate deposits. I only de-calced the kettle a few days ago!

The deposits of cc on the element makes the heat transfer from the element into the water less efficient,it must have a impact on the life of that element

Sitting on its base tripping when not switched on suggest a earth fault, taking it around the house trying it in other outlets is wasting your time
