Whats the best method to install new downlights and illuminated mirror and comply with the 17th, no rcd protection on the board, can upstairs lighting mcb be changed for a rcbo and run off this? or put in local rcd spur. Cheers

Yes, you can do either.

If you are fitting an RCD spur then its best to try and locate it in an airing cupboard rather then in the loft (if the room is upstairs).

Hey.

Personally would go for the RCBO, possibly less confusion in the event of fault - only having to go to one place for reset.

I would say it's worth doing a quick I/R test on the circuit involved first to identify any existing faults. If there are any you can advise the customer and if they dont want to shell out for repairs then you can always just go down the RCD spur route to protect the work you've done

Cheers:D

Thanks for the replies, this 17th is a pain as most of my work is in bathrooms, went to look at a job today, new bathroom suite etc in an old farmhouse, the room was originally a living room with chimney breast and alcoves, customer mentioned she would like an extractor fitting as well, there were sockets in room, at the db there were 3 phase for the farm outbuildings as well as the board for the house, I advised her to get a full time spark in, job was a nightmare, probably need a complete upgrade.
