Afternoon all,

Quick fire question. Can a RCD fused spur still be used for additional protection under the 18th.
I haven’t got my BBB with me and I recall it giving BSEN numbers for devices used for additional protection and RCD spurs not being one.

Job with extra lights and changing board for such a small job is crazy

Thanks

Yes the changes excluded RCD sockets and FCUs but a recent article in PE pointed out that they were omitted by mistake in the excitement of writing new regulations and this will be rectified in the next publication.

I have seen that article, however I have also heard from a number of sources that the omission was deliberate as the revised Standard for BS 7288 explicitly states that they cannot provide additional protection and should only be fitted downstream of an RCD to provide additional protection.

Apparently at least one manufacturer of such devices is in talks with BSI around this issue.

So unfortunately I would suggest that the use of RCD FCUs and SRCDs is in fact questionable as things stand.

Every SRCD and RCD FCU I have ever fitted has complied with the requirements of 415.1 from BS7671 thus meeting the requirements for additional protection.

What's changed in the product standard that they won't meet the requirements of 415.1 and 643.8 ?

I believe there is an explicit statement in the revised BS 7288 that they are unsuitable to provide additional protection. As I don't personally possess a copy of the Standard I cannot verify that.
