RCD spurs bathrooms

would like your opinions lads on using RCD FCUs
i have come across a few jobs recently where no space at CU or rewireble fuses at CU.client wants all
new spots and extracts etc so i have been taking afeed off upstairs cct to a RCD spur(fused to 5amp) and feeding evrything off bathroom from this.Is this a good cheap way of adhering to the 17th or am i missing sometinh.All answers much appreciated.ta

There is a lot of debate at the moment about the fact that you should RCD protect the whole circuit and not just a spur for the bathroom etc.

Same as for adding a spur to a RFC or radial.

Hence the reason why i always RCD the circuit in the CU, either by swapping over the RCD side or RCBO's ec..

I was planning to put in an rcbo last week but the old wylex cu and the lighting circuits were riddled with borrowed neutrals, what a nightmare really needs a rewire but people won,t pay for that on top of having their bathroom refitted, local rcd fcu in the only way to go on this particular installation and then needs a cable to the switch as everything is on old live commons. It's allright bringing in new regs but existing installations should be exempt unless they are going to be fully upgraded.

I know exactly what you are saying and i do agree with you, but there is 'talk' about what the regs actually mean with regards to this situation.

I think what you have done is spot on and in my view, does not make the installation less safe than before you were there.

Its just something to bear in mind in the future.

There is a big debate on this on another forum and there is a write up in ther latest copy of wiring matters produced by the IET.
Basically any adition to a circuit should bring the whole circuit worked on the the 17th, so RCD the lot.
I cant see a way round it.
