so gloves not up to much then

Not really..... how many times have you had a belt? And how many times has that been from a wayward elbow or forearm, or forehead for that matter. In reality, if everything goes absolutely tickety-boo, then you wouldn't even need gloves - just pull the cable, isolate it and get on with your day. But how mant times does everything go completely tickety-boo?

If you've got someone to send them from the UK, RS have them slightly cheaper.

Your guess is as good as mine as to how effective they are but I'm sure with a VDE mark and the companies reputation that will suffice, let us know how you get on if you use them :D

This is how I would do the work, its not advice

When working live,it was ingrained into myself to work with one hand in the pocket as much as possible

Stand on a rubber mat by all means,I would string a bit of single cable from one corner to the next of that chamber, not a physical, but a phsycological barrier in case of a momentary lack of concentration
I would work in a deliberate fasion and not be hurried in any way

Fear is your best tool followed by respect
good luck and I'm sure real world procedure that sometimes have to be undertaken, they will be overcome
