Discuss Running 2 radials off a spur. Is this possible? in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi all,

I've a double socket in the loft running off a spur from a bedroom socket.

I'd love to add lighting into the loft, and wondering if I can run a socket radial and lights off the spur using a junction box and 2 fused connection units?

Please see the attached diagram for a description of what I'm proposing. Please can you let me know if this is possible?

Many thanks,

Edward

Put your 3 amp FCU after the last double socket. This will comply with the current regulations.

With your drawing there's next to no chance of overloading the cable but you never know what will happen in the future.

In a word no. You would need to replace the point marked ‘JB’ with an FCU, then you could carry on with what you propose.

It’s not something a DIY’er should do IMO. You’ll need some appropriate test equipment, and probably a better design, in any case.

Welcome to the forum mate.
Does the circuit you are proposing to alter have RCD protection?

Yeah, it's the top floor sockets circuit, terminating in the consumer unit with an RCD.

Thanks for your help everyone. Would something like this be better?

Unfortunately the last double socket there is difficult to get another cable fed to, so would like to have that at the end of the circuit/radial.

Many thanks,

Edward

That’ll be fine.

How do you mean please? Please could you elaborate? Thanks

The plan as drawn is compliant with the requirements for ring final circuits, however there is not enough detail to know whether it complies with all other relevant regulations.

The last diagram is fine, but you could omit the light switch and replace the FCU with a switched version.

Also be sure that everything in the attic is off the load side of the 13A fuse
