Size of imperial cable

Afternoon all

This is based on a previous thread I’ve worked on, carried out an assessment on site , found a imperial aluminium sheathed copper single supply cables measuring at 10mm diameter on the strands themselves , what size of cable does this make it? And what is the copper equivalent now?

Yep this would be correct , measured today to find a 10mm diameter across the strands

I'm agreeing with you, just annoyed at myself that rather than doing it manually I referenced Google instead, and the first up result was wrong and I didn't double check!

aluminium sheathed copper single

We now have three chat threads about one cable and it's been called aluminium, tinned copper and now aluminium sheathed copper whatever that might be. I think we can see that clearly in the pics it's not sheathed, it's a single-insulated tinned copper stranded single-core conduit cable. Just a bog-standard conduit cable like every other conduit cable of its age, albeit quite a large one. Please can we stick to that description unless proven wrong and keep it all together in one thread?

10mm diameter would give 79mm² if it were solid, but it is stranded so there is some air space within that diameter. It is quite likely to be 0.1 sq. ins. (65mm²) of 19/.083 construction which is what I was leaning towards having seen the second set of pics. A 19-strand conductor has an overall diameter of about five times the diameter of one strand (draw it!) and 0.083 in = 2.1mm, so this checks out reasonably well. Obviously the best method to confirm is to measure one strand with a micrometer.
