I always assumed the gold plating was for, effectively corrosion resistance - as opposed to a significant change in sound quality/clarity? Also without trying this myself is there really any noticeable difference with larger cables, as long as they can carry the current through to the speakers then why bother. If it does then bring out the tails....

I know people who swear by expensive cables, both speaker and mains leads. I can't tell the difference personally, but I've not got particularly sensistive hearing. The only way to beb sure for yourself is do a blind A/B test, maybe at a hi-fi dealers - repeat it a few times and see if you can get consistent results, then there's your answer.
Just be careful, cos some of them will try and sell you £200 mains leads and £100 13A plugs aswell. The only way to go after that is have your ring main, supply cables, pylons and substations upgraded and gold plated eh! Call me cynical but... Daz

I bet the people with expensive set-ups would never let you hear it and voluntarily say - 'wow thats amazing sound, how do you do it?' they would probably be more inclined to show you their massive cable and brag about it 'till the cows come home.

I went to a house once and it was a retired sound tech from the BBC he had a stereo rigged up on spikes for feet on the stereo and speakers 4mm gold plated speaker wire and he claimed he could tell the difference if it wasn't it was all in a room with sound proofing on the walls and no windows. All very professionally done must have cost loads he said the stereo system was like £15000 and he had been adding to it ever since he had started with the BBC. My only problem with the whole set up was the fact i was there to install a fan for ventilation i could even hear it running so pointless having such an expensive set up.

For anyone over 50 and in many cases a lot younger, your hearing frequencies especially at the extremities, are diminishing fast, more so at the lower end and above 20K at the top end. So it's highly unlikely that you can hear the full range of any Hi Fi system. Never did see the point of paying those totally silly prices for speaker cables. I've always been into Hi Fi, and later Home Cinema, and have noticed myself that records or disks just don't seem to sound as good as i remember they once did!! lol!!

I've absolutely no idea mate!
It's what some HiFi pseudo told me once.
Hence the grin.
I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a cheap & expensive cable with my hearing.

You'll get all the technical jargon you could ever wish for, from the cable manufacturers, as to why oxygen free copper speakers cable has better frequency response. Whether you will be able to actually hear the difference in that heightened response is another matter... lol!!

I still believe it's the nuances within a good recording and play back, that make the difference, but again it all comes down to the individuals ability to hear/distinguish those frequencies.

Brings me back to my oridginal comment on 100v system.......have installed 3kw VA/PA systems in shopping centres and on London underground...and some of the systems from the likes of Baldwin Booxhall are like HD for the music guros on here...and guess what there wired in 2.5mm FP200 cable
