Hi

I am looking to add 2 or 3 sockets into my property, however due to the layout it would be easiest to add these as spurs of an existing socket....,I am aware that you are only allowed to spur one socket off of the original, however someone has advised me that if I was to spur of the original socket and put a 13amp FCU I could then add multiple spurs off this in a radial circuit (obviously the demand of all the spurs couldnt exceed 13amps) would this be ok???

If you want confirmation of this just look at Appendix 15 of BS7671. Not only can you chain a number of sockets off the 13A FCU, you can also reduce the cable size to match the reduced load, if you want to.

As far as i can make out in the OSG there is no limit to the amount of spurs as taken off one socket ( as long as its on the ring) but you cannot spur of a spur (unless using a FCU) or am a reading it wrong

Sorry
And aslong as you dont exceed the amount of original sockets on the ring

An unfused spur can feed either one single or one double socket outlet only and can be taken from the fuse or mcb in the consumer unit. p362, 433.1.5

The number of spurs supplied from a fused connection unit (a switched fused spur) and the size of the cable used to supply the spurs depends on the size of the fuse in the fused connection unit. p362, 433.1.5

In the end,all we are doing with any circuit is trying to ensure the cable can carry the likely load,if it cant fuse it down to limit the load

Even with 2 spurs off a socket ( if you can get 4 cores in the conection)it would be hard to find something to back you up if you were to say it is not permitted, maybe not good practice but allowable nevertheless

Running a radial off a fused spur with umpteen sockets would never cause VD or current carrying problems,so fit them until your hearts content
