Hi.

I'm planning to start up my own company that will do mainly domestic installations/repairs.Do I need to be registered with a body like the NIC?I hold a C&G 2330 Electrical Installation level 2&3 qualification and completed my 17th Edition as well.I've heard that when you join the nic they assess you to approve your competancy for installing and testing installations etc..if they approve you,you can do your installations and certify it yourself even if you don't hold a C&G 2391 Testing and Inspection qualification.I don't know how true this is?Can anyone give me some more advice on this.
Lastly, with my qualifications would it be nescessary to do the part p as well or is this not a prerequisite?

Thank you

you got the same quals as me (except i did 236)and i have been on the NIC domestic installer scheme for 2 years ,i am in the process of studying 2391 but you dont need it for NIC unless going approved contractor but you have to be trading at least 12 months before you can apply for that.

City spark why not take a look at Business Link which will give you a lot of good information about starting a business. You may even get a dummy business plan from them as an idea of how to structure it?

They do offer a lot of infornation, but it really is a csae of digging deep into it.

When I started my company a few years ago, I was really surprised about what was available from Business Link in terms of new business funding.

I actullay enquired to see if I could get some assistance with Membership fee's to one of the scheme's (i.e. NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA etc) and thought hey why not ask? - if you don't ask you don't get?.

They couldn't support that, but I did get some £1500 for my new website development!

Take a look at the site and give them a call, there should be a branch near you somewhere?

Hi..

Guys seem like we all on the same boat at the moment....!!!

If any of you guy plan just to domestic and require to certify any major job then you do need to complete your VRQ Part P.....because any governer boby go decise to go with they will ask for Part P Certificate...and if you do have 2391-10 then you can register as Approve scheme....i.e. you can do PIR as domestic, commercial and industral...which ever you decise to self-employ or work for someone.....this where the bigger fish live.....!!!

My advice is do your research well...eg: locations to cover, competitions, budget of setting up is not cheap and can you cope in your own....etc....
do bear it in mind the sistuatoin of the economic market that we facing at the moment....." credit crunch"....how much and how long houses price is falling ??..
in some part of the country where as people can affortd to buy a bigger house instead exten their house where job will creates...
I live in London but don't get much job now a day...been very quite since being of this year...consider to get job with agency for the time been until market back to normal !!!! well guy don't let me put the idea off...if you determine to succeed you need a bigger guts.....!!!!...well that my story and good luck guys....keep post which ever you decise...!!! good to share the thoughts and encouragement....!!!

Thanks for the advice i was looking to start on domestic then move into industry as i am mainly from industry background.

Hope the start goes well. Have you thought how you are going to attract business yet?

If your thinking of getting a website (and you probably should be!) check out my company's site, the construction marketing group - we specialise in marketing for construction related trades and would love to help you get going.

All the best.

Some interesting reading here, especially if,like me,thread readers are considering taking the plunge.

Anyway,I've spoken to Business Link (very good website) and I too was going to ask them about membership fees,I still might infact:p

They've sent me a business plan to compile, tricky but I'm sure I'll get there.

Interesting to note that they contributed to a website, what else do they contribute towards Warren (if you don't mind me asking)

I'm sure every viable business is considered on it's own merits but if you could give a general outline on how they helped you, that would be good.

Hope your business is doing well!

Cheers :D

try getting in with a few buiders/ property developers( on the domestic front), they've got more work to offer than joe public, who just wants a few down lighters. its all about continuity.
