I would say it provides protection against short circuit currents, overload currents (the MCB element) and earth fault currents (the RCD element).

It's from sparky facts exam sim, this is what annoys me about the questions about the 17th, the the definition can detract from the capability of the device

Some of these mock exam questions are written by Mickey Mouse.
I suppose they do make for a bit of research and questioning on the part of the reader . But if you were to take their answers as gospel you may fail the exam .
