TNS Earth clamp bust ?..

Hi Guys, Just a quick question regarding the earth clamp on a Domestic TNS system. The property we are rewiring at the moment has a TNS supply and the earthing clamp on the paper lead supply cable has rotted and is unusable. I spoke to DNO (Northern power grid) and asked if they could renew it for us. The call centre said no do it yourself or pay £160+ to have it converted to PME. I thought that if their equipment was faulty they were responsible for it and had to fix it. I know some sparks just stick a pipe bonding clamp round the cable and use that? I don't fancy doing anything with the cable because it looks knackered. Is a bonding clamp acceptable as long as Ze is correct?

No it has to be there special clamp.

No not at all, it is th DNO responsibility to maintain their equipment.

Take a Ze reading which you wont get, phone them up and tell them that you are unable to obtain it. Also tell them a elderly relative lives there and has essential medical equipment on site that requires a 24 hour supply.


That should get them moving a little quicker.

I did wonder regards the clamp, The DNO one's look more substantial than a bonding clamp.

Hey mate, I wouldnt touch it personally as it might well bite ya.....get them out to sort it.....not sure if they should be charging you as theyre providing the earth.but they seem to be a law unto themselves.

go back and tell the bint on the end of the phone its distributers facility earthing....and so they have a duty of care to maintain it...

go tell them that....

sick of hearing about this all the time...about DNOs shirking their resposibilities

Gawd, please don't, those old lead and paper cables are delicate and you're likely to end up causing an internal cable fault if you just use a pipe clamp with a screw tightner. You get a special constant pressure spring type clamp for lead cables, I'd try your local wholesalers for one.
