Hi chaps
Had £3k worth of gear stolen last night from a locked and alarmed ford transit in west london.

They got in without any damage probably a bump key or something

All dewalt and fluke gear
Its all marked with ses in permanent marker and UV marker if anyone sees anything for sale in this area

Soz to hear, there has been a spieght of Ford van breakins because you can buy a simple device of the internet to unlock them without leaving a trace, I would consider the vehicles security as priority before putting any kit back in it, a bloke round this way got done 3times and he decided it cheaper to change his van than keep getting hit.

As a result of reading this thread, I googled 'bump key'. Second in the listings is Amazon.
They must know why people are buying this stuff .
To me this is unethical , and has had made me think about future dealings with Amazon.
Surely only registered and vetted locksmiths should be able to buy this sort of thing.
Reading more of the listings is quite frightening.

Its not practical to carry all those tools up the stairs every day and night
But i am beefing up the security now and hope that will sort it

It's what to do though, it is getting too easy for them . With limited penalties , they have the incentive.
To be able to buy stuff openly like this is disgusting.

I got done twice in London in my old Sprinter van once in Ealing and other time in Hampton Court area , insurance company said they don't cover tools when van is unattended ,and tools would be removed overnight bloody hell , got £250 from them as damage to the van and that was it , Police said they probably had a buyer for Electrical tools etc before they even broke into the van , after that I backed the van right into a corner with walls covering rear and sliding door the van had fixed bulkhead as well, I used 2 van vaults in the end and bolted them down..and fitted the plates to all locks ..

Sign writing doesn't help either , they see you driving around then follow you and return when they're ready ..

I suppose mounting a shotgun to the inside roof, pointing it to the back doors, is classed as 'too harsh'..... Being electricians you have to trigger it electrically....

How are your locks Handy?

What, on the van?

I'm hoping that the security on the Custom is better than on the old Transit. The key's different and supposedly harder to pick.

Anyway, most of the time it's parked with back and side doors up against the fence, so someone would have to move the van first in order to access the load area. Also a bit of PIR floodlighting, so that anyone creeping about is well lit.

A van vault may do the the job for you, but once the scum will find out whats in there they will nick it together with the van.
If you have a lift then get a trolley type system for getting it upstairs.
If no lift then moving to a ground floor place with parking in the front may work out cheaper than £3k in stolen tools every year...

I would never rely on the standard locks on a Transit was common place 20 years ago to for thieves to steal the fuel cap and get a key cut, don't know what the locks are like these days but I fitted slam locks when I had a transit. If you google slam locks there are plenty of options for making vehicles more secure

deadlocks are better for the guys here, i wouldnt be suprised if a lot of them locked themselves out of there van using slamlocks.

deadlocks or slam locks are around £100 each

You pays your money you make your choice deadlocks rely on you remembering to use them they can become a pain if you are frequently accessing your vehicle during the day and usually end up not being used where as slam locks are in action all the time yes you do have to be careful you do not to lock yourself out and also that you do not lock yourself in with some setups

by law slamlocks need a release inside the vehicle where as deadlocks dont.

Might be worth while investing on a couple of slam locks

Should've read page 2 lol

How about sticking a PIR alarm that are used for sheds in the back of your van. The ones you turn on and off with a fob. I bet they won't be expecting that going off when they open the back of the van after using a bump key.
Something like this maybe. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00QX0TJTY?psc=1

Gas_gun_bird_scarer.jpg

what is that geordie?

It's called a Crow Scarer.

It's a propane cannon

It has a timer that tells it to go BANG at regular intervals but you can dump that & just wire it straight to you van's door switch ........

It's also useful for shiftin the snow of the roof of yer hoose!!

I can recommend these mul T locks. Youll see them fitted on British gas vans. I have an ex British van which is where I first came across them.

Had an attempted break and they couldn't get past the lock. Looks like they had a big crow bar on it, bent the door right back but couldn't get past the lock.

So I fit them to my vans now, cost £280 for the set but there a top piece of kit. Cheaper than buying new tools.

Just bought one of these for the side door
Had two slamlocks fitted to side and rear doors and uprated drivers door lock with a garrison lock
Clifford 650 alarm going in next week with new electronic dead locks

I had a transit 15 years ago and I'm sure there was an issue with the locks releasing when the loom was cut that went to the rear door lock , a hacksaw blade could be used to cut it between where the rear door hinges , I think they brought out some modification , but not sure....

The main problem is that the standard door lock opens up everything and a tibbee key can be bought very easily
